Soon Loo is CEO of the Brunei Economic Development Board which is Brunei government’s central statutory body for promoting and attracting Foreign Direct Investment into the nation. Most recently, he was CEO of Darussalam Enterprise, Brunei’s central government agency for developing SMEs, entrepreneurship, and industrial sites. He is also a director of Seri Venture Capital, an investment firm that invests in Brunei companies that have ambitions in regional expansion.
Soon has been serving on board of directors of public and private companies in Brunei, China, and Singapore — including formerly being the chairman and board member of a publicly listed Asian company that went IPO for S$2 billion of market capitalization. He represents Brunei in the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) since 2016.
Soon was a Regional Vice President for the AXA Group in the Asia-Pacific where he worked on business development and strategy for the regional office that oversaw the AXA Group companies in 11 countries, with a total annual business of US$9.5 billion. He was also entrusted to manage the S$120 million retail-line general insurance business for the group in Singapore.
Soon started his career in technology and had co-founded a technology company in Silicon Valley that raised over US$37 million of venture capital. The firm went on to be recognised as a top 20 leading emerging technology company for the Red Herring Magazine’s NDA conference.
In his personal capacity, Soon has been a visiting professor and adjunct faculty in universities in both Brunei and Singapore. He also mentors young executives both professionally and personally. Soon co-founded the Passion Unleashed Talk Series in Singapore that features leaders including minister of state, chairmen of listed companies, celebrities, world’s extreme endurance race athletes, and climbers of Mt Everest.
Soon was awarded the prestigious “Ten Outstanding Young Persons of The World” (TOYP) award organized by Junior Chamber International (JCI) and received the honour at Rio de Janeiro in 2013. With over 30 years in the current form, the JCI TOYP award aims to recognize active world citizens who excel in their chosen fields and create positive change in society. Past recipients of the awards includes Bill Clinton, John F. Kennedy, and Jackie Chan, all named before the age of 40.
Soon holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Harvard Business School.
